Sitting Pretty {Four Cats on a Sofa}

Why I Like This Space

The first thing I noticed about this space was the wonderful natural light that streams in the windows combined with the warmth of the stained wood floors. The Minneapolis home by SALA Architects combines modern and traditional elements. The dark contemporary table contrasts nicely with the wood flooring. The fabulous wall of windows brings the indoors inside. The stacking bookshelf on the blue wall reminds me of a piece of art. And who could resist relaxing in that Eames chair? I'll just go grab a book from the shelf and sit here all afternoon.

Why I Like This Space

The sun is shining here in Colorado and I'm thinking of summer—at least until the snow comes on the weekend.

As a former lifeguard I have spent countless hours on pool decks and the stunning landscaping designed by Steve Taylor's firm C.O.S. Design caught my eye for several reasons. I love how both the geometric shape of the pool and the stone pavers complements the lines and color scheme of the house. Imagine how wonderful it would be to make dinner in the alfresco pool house. The large outdoor kitchen is perfect for entertaining—plus it offers weather protection when rain or cooler weather invades. I'm already there sipping a maragarita in my dreams...

Upstairs, Downstairs {And a Slide}

Since the stairway is often one of the first things you see when you enter a home, it often sets the mood for welcoming guests. Here are a few of my faves.

I'm feeling the modern vibe in this high-tech circular stairwell above. Love how the natural wood floors soften the edginess of the brushed steel and glass. The sleek design of the stairs below with a pop of yellow adds an element of fun.

Perhaps the grand stairway below was inspired by the movie Gone With the Wind. I would need to stock up on ball gowns if I lived here. Red walls, white accents and a massive chandelier make a decidedly glamorous statement.

A glass wall paired with a glass stairway brings the oh-so lovely outdoors inside.

Flamboyant zebra carpeting on the steps and the Wizard of Oz nostalgia sign says be warned—anything can happen here...

Strategically placed peek-a-boo holes in the wall makes this garage stairway kid-friendly.

And lastly... If your life is so hectic you don't have time to take the stairs down, why not add a slide to your house. This half-tube stainless steel slide starts on the top floor near the home office, and lands below near both the living and dining areas. Two words: hashtag awesome!

Ski House

You might say I'm kind of obsessed with skiing. I grew up skiing nearly every day December through March because I lived only a block away from a ski area in Minnesota. Now I live in the foothills in Colorado—a short drive over the pass to premier mountain skiing and amazing slopeside homes. 

What makes the perfect ski house? I have a few ideas for a dreamy ski retreat...

1) Let's start with ski-in/ski-out access to the slopes.

2) Sweeping views of the mountains. A big fireplace that opens up to the kitchen and living room. Plus a living room large enough living area to handle all the friends that drop by.

3) A fireplace in the bedroom would be nice. I love the white walls that remind me of my snow-loving Scandinavian heritage.

4) Skiers often talk about getting in the hot tub after a long day on the slopes. But in my book nothing compares to warming up in a sauna. I love the glass doors on this one and the two-tiered seating for those who want to really feel the heat.

5) As a mom I appreciate a snow and mud proof space for the family to take off the ski boots and unload their gear at the end of the day. Love the bench seat and handy cubbies for gloves, hats, and more. And the tile floor is perfect!

A Room with a View {Kitchens}

I love sunlight streaming in through the windows—especially in the kitchen. And nothing compares to the beauty of sunlight coming through the trees. Imagine these views at your house...

Chic and Cozy Kitchens {Part 1}

At my house, the room where everyone gathers is the kitchen. Comfy banquettes make a cozy place to eat and just hang out. I'm thinking I need to add a built-in seating area to my kitchen too.

Especially during the winter, I camp out in a sunny room. A kitchen table with a window seat is perfect. Add some comfy cushions plus a few throw pillows and you might find me there all day. (Images via  here, here, here.)

A larger kitchen with a long bench seat like the one above is the perfect place to put your feet up and spend Sunday morning with a cup of coffee and the New York Times spread out on the table. (Image via here.)

7 Ways to Update a Home Office

Something about the idea of starting out fresh in a brand new year makes me want to update my studio. In a perfect world my office would be a sunny space that includes lots of storage options. I'm thinking "elegant chaos" might be the style I'm looking for. Or maybe "cheery Scandinavian." Right now my studio has an eclectic personality that desperately needs a major makeover.  How about you? I've got seven ways you can makeover your home office.

1) Bring the outdoors in...
Even small windows add a sunny mood to the space, especially if you add plants on the windowsill. A playful vibe makes me more creative so I definitely need to bring my bike in the office.

2) Embrace elegant chaos...
If everything is too matchy-matchy the work getting done feels static. Boring! Add some whimsy with a chandelier. No need to sacrifice organization in a small space, you can stay on track with an extensive filing system built into a desk and still have space to KEEP the comfy chair.

3) Hang up a string of lights...
Now you can find a wide variety of options for a string of indoor lights. The simple lights add a warm glow at night—or during the day. In my own office I have a string of lights with a beaded cover that cast light in a variety of colors. Oh yes, can't leave this image without mentioning the sofa. I'm imagining all of my dogs napping together on that sweet space.

4) Be moody...
To spark creativity, a space for displaying favorite images and creating mood boods is essential. I love pops of color against white walls. 

Although I'm drawn to white interiors, I'm thinking this dark chalkboard paint really shows off the artwork too. Plus a chalkboard wall adds to the FUN factor. I definitely want my office to be a fun space!

5) Stay centered...
My desk is smack dab against the wall. Bland! I'm thinking moving a desk to the middle of the room would help clear away the clutter and open up the environment to that healthy energy of Chi.

6) Collect books...
I know practically every book or magazine you want is available on your iPad, but there is something warm and comforting about feeling real paper. I love a big library.

7) Stay grounded...
Floors! They are easy to overlook, but I think a nice floor can make a room. A big part of the update in my office includes ripping up the current tan carpet (bleh!) and putting down hardwood. Now I love the clean look of wood floors but my three dogs spend their days lounging on my studio floor and they insist on a rug or two. And I agree with the pups—rugs add texture, warmth, and character to a room.

The room above has the most tranquil look and feel of the bunch. I love the bleached wood and rug combo here.

Decor Crush {Dark Wood Floors}

When we built our house years ago, we selected light colors for the wood floors. Now I realize how interesting it might have been to instead include a dark wood that anchors the space as well as provides an accent color. Check out the yummy floors in my pins below from my Decor Crush board on Pinterest.

In this white and gray kitchen the dark wooden floors make a nice focal point in a room filled with light.

I had fun dreaming up a cozy chic bedroom—a French chateau meets glamorous penthouse look. Living in a house nestled against a mountain range in Colorado means I see western decor everywhere. How to Create a Magnetic Chalkboard

 

Because I'm a doodler at heart, I love the decorating idea of adding chalkboard paint to a wall. This DIY idea makes the chalkboard portable, you can move the chalkboard you create around to different walls and different rooms. Easy peasy! I think the project is a fun accent for your child's bedroom or even the kitchen. This do-it-yourself paint project uses a Pottery Barn Kids frame and Benjamin Moore paints.

Magnetic Chalkboard

Supplies

• 18 x 18" piece of sheet metal (Or select any size to be cut to fit your picture frame)
• Household vinegar 
• Paint roller (small size, approx 6")
• Benjamin Moore Fresh Start Primer 
• Benjamin Moore Chalkboard Paint 
• 18" x 18" frame (Pottery Barn Kids frame is used in the video below)

Directions

1) Go to a metal supply shop and have them cut you a 18" x 18" piece of sheet metal—or any size that fits the picture frame you want to use.

2) Remove any grease on piece of sheet metal with ordinary household vinegar. Let the sheet dry.

3) Because sheet metal is a shiny and slick non-porous surface, you need to paint the metal with a primer like Benjamin Moore Fresh Start Primer because it will adhere to non-porous surfaces. 

4) After the primer dries, add a coat of chalkboard paint. Use long smooth strokes with a small paint roller. If you see any "lap lines" at the edges of your strokes of paint be sure to smooth the lines out with the roller.

5) Wait for the paint to dry and then add a second coat of chalkboard paint.

6) Let the painted metal dry thoroughly and then pop it into an 18" x 18" frame. Now it's ready to hang on the wall.

Style trends in white pop for obvious reasons. A 60's-style sofa called the Petrie sofa by Crate and Barrel has to be the perfect place to relax and watch reruns of The Dick Van Dyke Show. The House at Pooh Corner: A.A. Milne's Home for Sale

Back in 1925, A.A. Milne bought this charming country retreat Cotchford Farm for himself, his wife and son, Christopher Robin. While living here in the lovely Sussex countryside, Milne began writing the beloved stories of Christopher Robin and Winnie-the-Pooh. The house has had several owners, including the founder of The Rolling Stones, Brian Jones.

The grand three-story country house on 9.5 acres in East Sussex dates back to the mid-16th century and the home has had many renovations over the years.The home is listed at £2 million or about about $3.1 m. For more information on the home, check the Savills UK listing.

The House at Pooh Corner, published in 1928, is the second volume of stories about Winnie-the-Pooh, written by A. A. Milne and illustrated by E. H. Shepard.

Painting DIY: How to Make a Chalkboard Wall

 

Benjamin Moore Paints

You can create a fun and functional chalkboard wall in almost any room with durable chalkboard paint that's designed to be erasable and washable. Be inventive! You can paint a small section of the wall to resemble a chalkboard or paint the entire wall for your kids (or you) to draw large murals. With this paint you turn any rectangular area into artistic scribble space.

Helpful hints:

1) How much paint do you need for a specific room or wall? Use the Paint Calculator.

2) Pick the perfect color with a sample-sized can of paint that lets you test drive your favorite colors:

Find the perfect color using the online color samples, then go to the store to verify your choice with paint samples—or you can even order a sample online and have it shipped to you.

For example, look at the paint color samples online at Benjamin Moore. Remember your laptop monitor is not able to show the "true color"—the color you see on your laptop will not look the same as the paint color you will paint with. That's why ordering 16 oz. "sample color" paint cans will let you test out several colors at your home. Each sample paint can covers approximately two 4' X 4' or eight 2' x 2' areas.

Fresh Picks: Fave Place to Curl Up and Read a Book—or Nap

 

While in Minneapolis I spotted this amazing sofa featuring a lively mix of retro and paisley patterns. Not only did I have a decor crush from afar, when I sat down I knew it was true love. You can find the sofa in Minneapolis at the store Patina—a mesh of Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters.

Tea for two

A dear neighbor had a birthday tea party for me yesterday. Of course the tea and treats were delicious. Her pretty chickadee plates from Crate and Barrel are perfect for spring.

Decor Crush: A House Tour with George Clooney

I admit I have a crush on George Clooney, now I have a decor crush on his lovely home too. Check out his Los Angeles house tour here via CBS.com. His kitchen looks fabulous even though he says he doesn't do much cooking—instead he says the kitchen is the place he "orders food delivered." In the CBS interview he talks about the difference between a house and a home. He also chats about adopting his shelter dog Einstein, the importance of friendships, his family, his famous aunt Rosemary Clooney, politics, and the Academy Awards to be held this weekend. If you missed his dreamy I-can't-watch-it-enough TV commercial where he gets hitched, check it out here.

So many of Clooney's films are my favorites: Ides of March, The Descendants, and Up in the Air. On a personal note, as a shelter dog adoption counselor, I love the fact George adopted a shelter dog.

Julia's popular lifestyle blog Hooked on Houses turns 4 years old this week. If you like real estate blogs, this one is for you. Even better, if you like to also glimpse into the homes of celebrities and homes on movie and TV sets, then reading Julia's blog will quickly become one of your favorites.

A photo feast of design ideas served in a stylish book

 

Chronicle Books has been a fave of mine for years. You can count on their books to include stunning photography and stylish illustrations. Recently I picked up a copy of Decorate: 1,000 Design Ideas for Every Room in Your Home and like the old saying goes, I couldn't put it down.

As the title suggests, the book is filled with top drawer advice from the world's best designers and leading decor experts including style gurus Kelly Wearstler, Amy Butler, and Jonathan Adler. The book authors are two of my favorite lifestyle writers: Holly Becker (founder of the popular design blog Decor8) and Joanna Copestick (savvy lifestyle writer of 10 stylish decor books).

What I liked about the book:

• Perfect mix of practical and professional tips to inspire you on your next project.
• No matter your design dilemma, this book has ideas for almost every room and every budget.
• Includes start-to-finish tips to help you spruce up or totally redo a room.
• Loaded with helpful extras including checklists, floorplans, line illustrations and even shortcuts!

Perhaps the popular lifestyle blog Apartment Therapy sums it up best:

"It's like your first pack of Starbursts - exploding with color, homes and sunshine in equal measure. "

Inspiration Is Everywhere: Design*Sponge at Home

If you are a fan of the lovely blog Design*Sponge by Brooklyn-based writer Grace Bonney, then you'll adore her decor book Design*Sponge at Home. My favorite things about this book: decor ideas fit for a "real" home, home tours give a glimpse inside the cozy chic homes of celebs and designers, plus step-by-step instructions for decor projects I have to try. Book Review: Fresh American Spaces

Did you know jelly beans and other candy can help you select the perfect paint colors for your home? And if you love sharing your house with dogs, then you probably find the fun in functional. These are just a few of the refreshing decorating philosophies in Annie Selke's decor book Fresh American Spaces.

In addition to inspiring decor photos, she includes step-by-step directions for DIY projects that fit your style including: painting stripes on a wall, perfecting a mound of roses in a bouquet, organizing a wall of pictures, and adding stripes to towels. 

If you love color but wonder just what colors work for your home, Selke includes several color-matching ideas using fabrics, paints, and more. (Plus she leaves out the guessing work by including the paint names for colors from popular brands.) 

Filled with sparkling photos to inspire your home decorating, her book includes a wide variety of styles in five sections:

• Refined Romantic
• Nuanced Neutral
• Happy Preppy

Romantic Prairie Style

 

I will always be a fan of Laura Ingalls Wilder's The Little House on the Prairie series. And maybe that is why I have a fondness for the romantic prairie style decor today. Pair author Fifi O'neill's new book Romantic Prairie Style with a cup of herbal tea and it's a perfect way to warm up on a chilly day. As the publisher says,

"Romantic Prairie Style embraces simple pleasures, comfort, and the long-cherished ideals of natural beauty, simplicity, and harmony with the earth. Decor Crush: Random & fun art on Coldplay piano

 

I love the random and fun art on Chris Martin's colorful piano. Even if he calls his band a group of middle-aged rockers, I think Coldplay's music will always be setting the latest trend in music and style.

The band's new album Mylo Xyloto will be released October 24th.

DIY: Mini pumpkins

 

I love this mini pumpkin plant arrangement given to me by a dear friend and neighbor. Best of all, you can dry the pumpkins on the stems by removing the leaves and then preserve them for fall decor.

Evidently this plant is edible too (chop and toss into stir fry). Check in later for details.

Decor Crush: Jennifer Lopez's new house in the Hamptons

 

Lopez's new digs in the Hampton's exclusive Water Mill area look amazing: 14,000 square-foot shingle style house, 7 bedrooms and 9.5 baths, outdoor spa/pool with a fireplace, master suite and jr suite. My favorite room is the spacious crisp white kitchen. Imagine the meals you could prepare here! The Lopez place reminds me of Erica Barry's (Diane Keaton) Hamptons beach house in the movie Something's Gotta Give. For more details on the Lopez home check out the lovely blog Hooked on Houses by Julia and the Corcoran property listing.

Decor Crush: Claire and Phil's house on the Modern Family series

I want to live in Claire and Phil Dunphy's house on Modern Family or be their neighbor. And it's not about how grand the house is–that would be the home of the series patriarch. I love the way the set looks like a real home, where Pottery Barn charm and everyday family chaos collide. The set decor mixes vintage Craftsman with hip West Coast style. I adore the colors–Benjamin Moore "Labrador Blue" on the entry walls. Colorful artwork all over the walls. Bold striped pillows look inviting on my major decor crush: the comfy beige sofa from Sofa U Love.

Decor Crush: Rice Paper Lantern on the show White Collar

 

I believe in love at first sight. Especially while watching TV or a movie.

Let me explain...

Almost everything looks better on TV–especially home decor or cars or clothes. So it is only natural to see something even for just a second on your TV and instantly feel that connection. But where can you find it? Magazines and blogs do a great job of doing the sleuthing for the best in celebrity and pop culture clothing.

Amazing couches, lovely lamps, and impressive bookshelves rarely get ID'd in the media. That's why every Friday I am going to post one TV (or movie) home decor crush on my blog and my new Tumblr blog Decor Crush. Feel free to send me your ideas for identifying an item featured on Decor Crush. And send me suggestions for Decor Crush items. Together we will solve the puzzles.

The lamp in the apartment of the charming criminal mastermind Neal Caffrey (Matt Bomer) on the show White Collar. I love this rice paper lantern because it is not the typical round shape.

Room for Children: Stylish Spaces for Sleep and Play

 

 

Looking for decorating ideas for a nursery or a child's bedroom? Susanna Salk's visually exciting book Room for Children: Stylish Spaces for Sleep and Play is a stunning treasure trove of decorating ideas and a fun read. Kelly Wearstler, renowned interior designer and author of several books, writes the foreword.

Is it possible to design a room that pleases both the parents and their children? Salk has found a way. Page after page of lovely photography by some of the industry's top photographers–Pieter Estersohn, Paul Costello, William Abranowicz, Melanie Aveced, and others–makes me want redecorate a few rooms at my house. No matter your style–modern, formal to whimsical–you will find a room that fits your mood. The book showcases a variety of decorating styles for bedrooms, play spaces, and study areas created by a talented group of designers including Kelly Wearstler, Charlotte Moss, Alessandra Branca, Amanda Nisbet, and Thomas Jayne, among many others.  

Salk is a leading design maven with many publishing success stories. Here are just a few: author of Weekend Retreats, a contributing editor for Bon Appetit Magazine, 1STDIBS.COM, and iVillage.com, as well as a former special projects editor at House & Garden. In the book she features an assortment of rooms that will appeal to a variety of ages. Her book has a sophisticated take on decor for children according to the LAtimes.com: 

The book suggests that just because a room is designed for a kid, that's no reason the design can't be all grown up. There is nothing DIY about "Room for Children," and no sense of trying to do more with less. Two-dozen-plus rooms in the book differ in style, but few could be described as "cute."
