Valentine Heart Pin {DIY}

Today I wanted to share a tutorial for a quick and easy Valentine's Day project. These Valentine's Day mini heart pins can be made with felt or fabric scraps you have on hand and they are oh so cute.

Pin it on a shirt to add some Valentine bling. Or attach the heart to a postcard. For this easy craft I used craft felt (or try any "Valentine-y" fabric scraps) as the heart structure. I added embellishments using embroidery thread, beads, more felt hearts, sequins, and even recycled jewelry. The darker pink heart used medium-size pearl beads from a favorite bracelet that unfortunately broke one day. Instead of throwing away all those adorable beads I added a few here and there to craft projects. Easy peasy! See the complete directions below. 

Directions: Mini Heart Pins

Supplies:

• Felt in a variety of colors: I am using white, dark pink, and light pink
• Embroidery thread
• Safety pin or other fastener
• Bead and sequins: I use a variety of round beads and heart-shaped beads
• Recycled jewelry beads or parts
• Sewing tools: needle, scissors, fabric marker
• Small amount of poly fill to make the tiny heart pillows

Directions

1. Create a heart shape pattern piece: You can draw the heart freehand--my hearts are approximately 2.25" wide. Or download my heart shape pdf here (Option-Click on macs). Cut out the paper heart shape to use as a pattern in step 3.
2. Place the felt or other fabric you use on a table.
3. Trace the paper heart shape pattern on the fabric using a fabric marker.
4. Repeat step 3 to make the back side of the pin.
5. Sew the two hearts together with embroidery thread using a straight stitch or blanket stich. For more help with the hand stitching. If you want a tutorial on blanket stitching, check out futuregirl's step-by-step tutorial for the Blanket Stitch and more sewing.
6. Leave small opening in the side to add poly fill, and then finish the sewing the edges together.
7. Add embellishments such as beads or additional felt shapes.
8. Attach a safety pin or other fastener to the back with embroider thread.

Add some vintage charm with calligraphy-style artwork featuring a Christmas dove, reindeer and a snowflake with this set of 8 tags (4 unique designs). The downloadable PDF includes a set of tags designed by me that feature a holiday greeting paired with black and white vintage artwork that is hand tinted by me in a light minty green.

Attach the tags on a gift box or bag with a piece of twine or ribbon. Or tape the tags to a gift or a plate of cookies. Easy to print and cut out. 

This set of tags will look great printed on any of your favorite card stock paper—plus printing the tags won’t drain your printer of gobs of colored ink. The only color featured on the tag is a light mint green.

Handmade Holiday {Learn to Knit Kit}

I'm on a mission to make this a handmade holiday season. I love to knit and when I saw this new kit at Purl Soho I knew it was perfect for gift giving. I remember my first knitting projects as a teen. I made cozy scarves and even a baby sweater for my niece. Fortunately I had a very patient Norwegian friend teaching me how to knit and eventually I got the hang of it and now I'm addicted :)  

Knitting is a craft you can do almost anywhere. I'm the type of person that likes to keep busy, so I carry my projects on subways, buses, planes, and of course, in the car. I love the message on the Purl Soho blog:

DIY: Reinvention {Sewing with Rescued Materials}

If you are like me you probably have a box or two filled with scraps of fabric or gently worn clothing that you would like to re-purpose. The book Reinvention: Sewing with Rescued Materials by award-winning blogger Maya Donenfeld is a wonderful guide to working with recycled materials—linen, burlap, wool and more.

Reinventing everyday materials into extraordinary items is my fave. This practical and pretty guide—the photography is awesome—includes patterns as well as step by step directions for making 28 projects. It includes a detailed section on sewing basics and extras including printing on fabric techniques, stencilling and more.

Just My Type {Calligraphy by Lindsay Letters}

Remember when they taught penmanship in school? Today with texting and everything digital it feels good to receive something hand written in the mail. As an illustrator I'm fond of hand lettering and calligraphy—especially the sweet artwork by Lindsay Sherbondy at Lindsay Letters. If you are interested in the process she uses to create her lovely lettering, you can find out all about her here. Of course if you want to buy something she created, go to her shop here. The super exciting part is Lindsay will be launching her NEW shop soon—check her tweets at @lindsay_letters for updates on the launch.

Imagine having Lindsay address your wedding invites. I've included samples of her handiwork below. Although it is tempting to call her up right now for custom lettering, you'll have to wait a bit to due to her new shop launch—she is  "not going to be taking any completely custom work, envelope addressing, or non-editorial hand lettering inquiries until after the holidays."

Lovely lettering on an envelope is my fave.

Easy Handmade Gifts to Sew

Are you looking for inspiration for making gifts that you can sew in an afternoon or less? I am always on the look out for fuss-free sewing projects. And I like projects that are very forgiving—because I will probably make a few mistakes in the process. Above all, I want to have fun while sewing. 

Recently I shared in a post one of my favorite new sewing books by Nicole Blum and Debra Immergut called Improv Sewing. Besides loads of lovely fashions to sew, this book is packed with pretty gifts to make. Here are just a few of the many projects in their book: little star mittens, a reversible belt, a simple jersey shawl, vintage hankie tissue case, blanket stitched armies.

BEADED CUFF

I am going to try the beaded cuff bracelet from the book this weekend. All it takes is a 5" x 8" scrap of fabric—I'm going to recycle some fabric from an old t-shirt. Plus you'll need 2 sets of pearl snaps, thread, seed beads, and a needle and thread. The project requires a sewing machine to zigzag stitch around the pre-folded bracelet.

In a nutshell, here's how: To form a finished edge, on both of the 8" sides, fold in 1/2" to the wrong side. Then press the folded edges. Now fold the fold the fabric in thirds—the finished cuff will be approximately 1-1/2" wide. Do a neat zigzag stitch close to the edges to form the bracelet. Then add the snaps and embellish with beads.

Easy peasy! Check back and see how my project turns out.

Sweet things: Handmade cards that build confidence and pride

Spread a little love with these handmade cards created by adults with intellectual disabilities. 

The card featured above is one of a series of designs featuring a unique paper folding design that adds texture and color. Many of the  cards feature a silhouette of a variety of dog breeds and cats. I especially love the doxie card above as well as the poodle designs. The cards are made by a super talented group of adults at Chrestomathy , an organization that specializes in creatively providing work opportunities for adults with intellectual disabilities.

On my desk today

Thinking about Valentine-y hearts, bouquets of pink blossoms, and all things pretty today. I have a stash of glitter pens from Martha Stewart that I adore to use for embellishments on my art or an envelope I pop in the mail. Here is what’s on my desk today—a collection of items I am using in my illustration and design work. Cooking with Kids: Pizza Lollipops

Is it possible to combine two of my favoriet things--lollipops and pizza?

Meaghan Montford, The decorated cookie blogger, loves tiny versions of things. And she can almost always think of a clever way to add a lollipop stick to an edible craft. (She also writes the Edible Crafts blog.)

In her pizza pops post Meaghan tells you exactly how to make your own Pizza Lollipops at home. And if you are really adventurous you can make a lollipop calzone too! Too cool.

I think making a half a dozen of the cute pops would make a clever gift idea.

In honor of earth week...

Spring is here. Something about digging in the dirt makes me smile. Gardening mixes therapy with sunshine! So grab some seeds and a shovel. 

One of the best parts of gardening is the fact you don't need a lot of space. A corner garden with some sunshine works. Or plant seeds in a container garden on your patio or deck.  Planting seeds is a fun activity for the whole family. My kids love to design their own gardens. Keeping the plants happy with regular watering teaches responsibility too.

Yep, I admit my weakness. I am obsessed with craft projects and anything with loads of fluffy tulle.

Simply Delish Peppermint Bark Recipe

 

Looking for an easy last-minute holiday candy recipe? Here is one of my favorites: Last Christmas I wrote a post about an easy and delish recipe for classic peppermint bark. You can check out the recipe and a how-to video on the TODAY Show with Chef Kathleen Daelemans. Full recipe is available on the Today Show website.

The inexpensive homemade version is a great gift idea too. The candy recipe only has four ingredients:

• bittersweet chocolate wafers or chips
• white chocolate wafers or white chocolate
• canola oil
• peppermint candy

If you don't want to make the peppermint bark at home, check out the yummy Williams-Sonoma Original Peppermint Bark ($26.50 for a one-pound tin).

DIY: Make a giant Halloween spider for the front porch

This week why not make a giant spooky spider to greet your trick-or-treaters. A Halloween yard decoration is a fun craft that sets the mood for parties too. Kids can make the spider, but parents or an adult should help out when you need to use a craft knife or scissors. Shop, Look, + Learn Art

The studio/shop Collage Collage just opened in Vancouver. This inspiring place is an art destination designed for kids that adults love too. Definitely on my to-do list next time I visit Vancouver. Owner Erin Bonnifero teaches art classes for kids and hosts crafty birthday parties. Based on the photos and descriptions I think the store is geared toward younger kids and elementary age students. Store features cool art supplies that you can try out. Be prepared to get messy. Plenty of gift items for crafty kids including hand made toys, books, music and more.

Halloween is a favorite time of year for many kids and moms. One of my holiday faves is candy corn so when I found Gerald the Candy Corn Dog on Etsy I knew I was in love.

 

 

According to Cassandra at her Etsy shop, Gerald is two years old and smells of vanilla pudding and gingerbread. He's made of a combination of blizzard and anti-pill fleece. Digital Kid Syndrome: Are Your Kids Couch Potatoes?

I dream about a world--or maybe just a weekend--without a Wii, Xbox, or iPod. My kids would talk to me and other real people in real time. Their eyes would enjoy looking at real things like books, bicycles, broccoli, and basketball courts. Their arms and legs would move with real things like the vacuum cleaner!

Okay, it's just a dream. But what if you could convince your kids to step away from their digital worlds and go outside. Taking a class with their friends or with siblings is one way to develop new hobbies and talents that can last a lifetime. Imagine a teen who makes dinner. Or an 8-year-old who creates all your greeting cards. According to the clever editors at Oprah.com you have many wonderful choices including these ideas:

• Cooking classes (or teach them to cook at home with Recipes Your Kids Will Enjoy Making and Eating!)
• Music classes
• Photography class with mom or dad (check out these Photography Tips)
• Fitness class
• Sewing, knitting, or other craft classes

In my personal experience, some affordable (and even free) classes that last a day or an afternoon can be great fun too. Group lessons are usually more affordable. Here are some to try:

• Horseback riding lessons (More affordable lessons might be offered to a group such as Girl Scouts, etc.)
• Writing or journaling classes (Some classes are offered for free at the library)
• Tennis lessons
• Golf Lessons 
• Scuba diving lessons
• Pottery or ceramics classes
• Mommy and kids craft classes at your library 
• Or create a co-op with your friends. Each mom (or dad) can sign up to teach a class in a hobby they enjoy

Let's Make Holiday Pop-Up Cards

I love making cards with my kids. We get out the jars of glitter, fancy papers, pens, and markers. We even recylce old cards and make them new again. When I saw the famous (and very talented) pop-up book illustrator Robert Sabuda making pop-up cards with Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford on the TODAY Show I had to share his ideas.

Robert Sabuda was on the TODAY Show today, but I couldn't find the video link for this segment. (I will keep looking, stay tuned.) Holiday Crafts: Handcrafted Soaps

My kids have a week off from school over Thanksgiving break so I am thinking of fun and relatively easy crafts we can make together for holiday gifts.

Time to flex those creative muscles with a soap making project. First I must admit I have never made soap before, so finding an easy method is essential. The most basic type of soap making is known as melt and pour method. Because soap making involves melting ingredients in the microwave, this craft activity is for older kids/teens and should be supervised by an adult.

Soap Making Kits

I love a good craft kit for my first attempt at a new craft. A basic kit will include meltable soap base cubes, one or two colors, one or two scents, and a couple of molds. You can provide the optional add-ins from your pantry or garden. One example of a craft kit is the Cool Soap Stuff Kit available at Michaels craft store (see photo above).

Cost

Basic ingredients and supplies for 8 bars of soap cost about $20 to $25 at a craft store. Some of the supplies include long-lasting or reusable items.

Wrap It Up

If you are giving the soap as a gift, your soap can be wrapped in a new wash cloth and tied with yarn, ribbon, or rafia ribbon according to writer Kim Ode at StarTribune.com.

Make A Difference: Non-Toxic Art Supplies for Kids

If your kids like art chances are you have a drawer or box full of art supplies. Did you know some of the common art supplies contain ammonia, formaldehyde, or turpentine that emit asthma-inducing chems? According to the go green nonprofit IdealBite.com, "Up to 36 billion pounds of toxic acrylic polymer solvents, found in many traditional art supplies, are produced each year."
