My fondest memories of summer as a kid involved going to "the lake" for the weekend. In Minnesota it seemed like practically everyone headed north to their cabin on a lake. Although my family didn't have a cabin, thanks to the generosity of friends and relatives we always found a way to gather at a lake. We'd sleep in late, swim all afternoon until my skin turned prune-y, collect smooth rocks on the beach, watch the grown-ups pan fry sunnies for dinner, and play ping pong after dusk until the mosquitoes were too thick. At night the world was darker by a lake than any other place I knew. There the stars really did twinkle. And if I was very, very lucky I would watch one or two stars falling from the sky...
A narrow dirt road with long stretches of washboard bumps wraps around the lake. At the southwest corner is a sign. Which way would you turn? Left to the cabin? Or right to the lake?
